CQF Month 2 - August 2012 - Which Way

General Description of Block: This nine patch block is made from two sets of four identical blocks, (one on the corners, and one on the edges) with a third block in the center.  When I look at it I see arrows pointing in every direction....as if asking "Which way?"

FQG: Your kit contains fabric for the grey bits.  You need to add a white background, plus red and blue arrows.

Cutting Directions: (61* pieces....but some will be strip pieced to make it easier.)
  • From background (white)
    • cut 2, 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" squares
    • cut 3, 2" x 8" rectangles
    • cut 2, 2" x 4" rectangles
  • From grey
    • cut 3, 2" x 12" rectangles
      • sub-cut rectangles:
        • 2" x 8" rectangle - one from each larger rectangle
        • set aside 2, 2" x 4" rectangles  (you will use 1 and have 1 extra)
        • sub-cut third 2" x 4" rectangle into 2, 2" x 2" squares
  • From red
    • cut 1, 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" square
    • cut 2, 2" x 8" rectangles
    • cut 1, 2" x 2" square
  • From blue
    • cut 1, 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" square
    • cut 1, 2" x 8" rectangle

Piecing Directions:
Corners - Make 4 identical blocks

  • Gather 9, 2"x 8" rectangles (3 white, 3 grey, 2 red, and 1 blue)
  • Sew 3 sets of 4 in the following orders
    • grey, blue, white
    • white, grey, red
    • red, white, grey
  • Iron seams towards the grey.  On sets where grey is on the outside iron both seams towards the outside.
  • Cut sets, perpendicular to the seams, into 4, 2" x 5" strips
  • Sew long edges of strips together, with the center blocks arranged blue, grey, white.
  • Iron seams toward the outside.
  • Trim to 5" squares.

Edges - Make 4 identical blocks

  • Gather 4, 5 3/4" x 5 3/4" squares (2 white, 1 red, 1 blue)
  • Draw a line from corner to corner, diagonally, across the back of the white squares
    • Layer with right sides together, 1 white w/ 1 blue, and 1 white with 1 red.
    • Sew a smidgen less than 1/4" from each side of the diagonal line.  (I use a 1/4" foot and align it so the flange falls just to the right of the line as I sew)
    • Cut on line
    • Iron toward the dark side.
  • Draw a line from corner to corner, diagonally, across the back of the red/white patches.
    • Layer with right sides together, so that seams snuggle.  Red and blue should both be lying with the white from the patch it is paired with.
    • Sew a smidgen less than 1/4" from each side of the diagonal line.
    • Cut on line.
    • Pop tiny center seam and iron seams in a spiral.
  • Trim to 5" squares.

Center - Make 1

  • Gather 3, 2" x 4" rectangles (2 white, one grey); 3, 2" x 2" squares (2 grey, 1 red)
  • Sew 2" x 4" rectangles into a set
    • Arrange strips white, grey, white
    • Iron seams toward the grey
    • Cut set into 2, 2" x 5" rectangles
  • Sew 1 grey 2" square to parallel sides of the red 2" square
    • Iron seams towards the grey
  • Sew long edges of strips together, with the center blocks arranged grey, red, grey.
  • Iron seams toward the outside.
  • Trim to 5" squares.

Assemble Block

  • Gather 9, 5" blocks (4 corners, 4 edges, 1 center)
  • Arrange corners so that the red corner patch is in the corner of the large square
  • Arrange edges.  When the corner blocks meet the edge blocks they should create single color arrows.  Blue arrows point clockwise.
  • Sew blocks together to make three rows.
    • Rows 1 & 3: corner block with red corner in upper left, edge block with blue triangle pointing to the right, corner block with red corner in upper right
    • Row 2: edge block with red triangle pointing down, center block, edge block with blue triangle pointing down
  • Sew rows together to make block.
  • Trim to 14" square.

This is a sample of what 12 blocks would look like.  This quilt would measure 43.5" x 57".

There will be 30 kits up for grabs at the next guild meeting (July 24th).  Finished blocks and unfinished kits are to be returned at the following meeting (August 28).  One person will be randomly selected from those returning finished blocks to win them all.
